Gir is a breed of cows originating from Junagadh district of Gujarat. It is one of the best bovine breeds of the country known for its magnificent looks and distinct features like producing the highest quantity of milk, round-shaped head and red coat as well as endurance. The cow lovers also bring these cows from Junagarh. Hybrid varieties are also developed in the state as well as the country. Brazil has a good strength of Gir cows in comparison to India.
A cow is able to run a family and this is the reason cow lovers are getting attracted towards Gir cows instead of other ones. 7-8 kgs of cow dug and 4-6 litres of cow urine helps in irrigating 10 beeghas of field. Experts pointed out that during 1960s, the breed was exported to Brazil from where it spread to Mexico and around 20 other countries. In Brazil, Gir is synonymous to cow. Currently, many states have formed Gir cow clubs to promote its breeding. “We are fascinated by the Gir breed, many people associated with dairy products are willing to breed Gir cows and others want to keep it at fields and homes.
The original home of Gir cows is Gir forest and areas around it like Junagadh, Bhavnagar, Rajkot and Amreli districts of Gujarat. Gir cows are good milk producers.
